Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA)

The IIIA is a research centre, belonging to the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). Founded in 1985 it currently has over 70 full-time researchers and engineers, including 24 PhD students. Its mission is to carry out very high quality research in Artificial Intelligence. In particular, the IIIA learning systems department carries out research in machine learning and offers services in data analysis, data mining, knowledge discovery and big data analytics in bioinformatics.

The group has expertise in case based reasoning and in probabilistic approaches to machine learning (including Bayesian learning and probabilistic graphical models).

  • 1.

    ONCNOSIS: Identification of biomarkers with diagnostic and therapeutic value for the neoplastic disease

    ONCNOSIS is a national project funded by the CENIT program - "National Strategic Consortia for Technical Research" CDTI, the Ministry of Science and Innovation. With a budget of around 27M€, it is coordinated by ORYZON genomics and Ferrer Group International, both partners of ONCNOSIS Pharma. ONCNOSIS also has the support of 20 Spanish academic groups, recognized internationally, from 6 hospitals, 6 universities and research centers 8 independent level. The project began in 2006 and ended in mid-2010. ONCNOSIS aimed to develop new and better tests for the detection of early development of oncologic disease, thus increasing the likelihood of cure. Also they intended to develop strategies to treat the disease, based on knowledge of changes that characterize cancer cells. The project focused its research on advanced technologies in genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and nanotechnology, to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools.
