Job description

The role

CRG is looking for a team leader for the system administration of the compute clusters of the CRG and the CNAG-CRG. Responsibilities in the short term include the day-to-day management of the systems administration of the clusters. Medium term objective will be to merge two large scale compute and storage systems into a single HPC system with extensive storage. This HPC system will support the research of the groups of the CRG and CNAG-CRG as well as genomics facilities on both sites, and the proteomics and microscopy core facilities.

You will be responsible for managing a team of four Systems Administrators. The responsibilities of this team include managing large compute clusters, petabyte scale scientific storage systems and supporting the users. It is very important to be able to proactively plan for new solutions and to architect scalable, performant and robust solutions.

We are looking for a hands-on team player who is capable of providing technical leadership.

Personal organisation, time management, and excellent communication skills are hereby essential.

About CRG's Scientific Information Technologies (SIT)

The Unit provides computing resources and technical support to CRG researchers. The unit has the necessary expertise to build high-performance computing systems in the coming years, taking the high compute and bandwidth capabilities required by researchers into account.

SIT delivers know-how and best practices to users for the optimal usage of computing resources, improving application performance and providing them with regular training. SIT as an operations team administers more than 200 compute nodes and servers. The unit manages a computing cluster comprised of 3112 cores interconnected with a 10Gb Ethernet network.

The exponential growth in genomic data, particularly from Next-Gen Sequencing (NGS), demands high-performance and scalable storage infrastructures. The unit manages heterogeneous disk-based storage that contains research data, currently 5 PB of usable storage in two different data centres.
The facility has become a key partner in many of the research projects carried out at the institute.

About CNAG's HPC cluster

The CNAG HPC cluster are dedicated for all stages of the analysis of next generation sequencing data and comprise of over 4000 cores with a total of 44 TB of memory connected with an infiniband network to 4.2 PB of disk storage and a Spectralogic tape archive system.  The cluster also contains specialized compute nodes each with Tesla K80 GPUs mainly for sequence read alignment, and one large memory node with 2TB of memory for genome assembly projects.

Desired skills and expertise

Who would we like to hire?

  • You hold a degree in Computer Science or similar discipline or have equivalent work experience
  • You have over 10 years experience within the field of Information Technology
  • You have over 3 years experience in the systems administration of high performance computers on large compute clusters
  • You have a proven trackrecord of succesfully managing technical people
  • You have experience in designing and setting up new functionality of the compute cluster
  • You previously managed a similar merge of compute and storage systems into a HPC system
  • You have experience with the administration of heterogeneous compute environments
  • You have indepth knowledge and practical experience of high performance filesystems (GPFS, Lustre)
  • You have proven workexperience with large scale storage (for example Isilons)
  • You have experience in designing and setting up new functionality of the compute cluster
  • You speak fluent English and Spanish

Desirable but not required

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (or other Linux) administration experience
  • Experience/knowledge of large scale system management and deployment methods (for example Puppet or Ansible)
  • Experience/knowledge of container technologies
  • Experience of backup technologies and ways of protecting valuable scientific data
  • Experience working with biological data
